Since the COVID-19 pandemic reached Tennessee, the twin goals of Nashville School of Law have been to keep its students, faculty, and staff safe and to keep our doors open. Before classes began in August 2020, the School announced it would allow students and faculty to choose to attend classes – except for skills-based classes – either in person or remotely. The School also announced this policy would apply to all classes offered through December 17, 2020 and that the policy would be reviewed before classes resumed in January.

Rather than abating, COVID-19 continues to grip Tennessee. The increase in positive test results, the number of active cases, the number of persons hospitalized with COVID-19, and the number of COVID-19-related deaths are accelerating. While safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines will be available soon, healthcare experts caution that preventative measures must remain in place for the foreseeable future to “flatten the curve.”

Accordingly, the School will continue presenting classes both in person and remotely when school resumes on January 4, 2021. The Trial Practices classes will remain an exception. Students enrolled in these classes must attend in person. If you are enrolled in a Trial Practice class and decide you cannot continue in person, you must contact Beth McDonald before January 5, 2021 to discuss your options.

You do not need to contact the School if you desire to continue your current attendance option or if you desire to switch from in-person to remote attendance. However, if you desire to switch from remote to in-person attendance, you must contact the School via email to Attendance@NSL.law before January 4, 2021.

This attendance policy will remain in effect until the School determines the local health situation supports a return to total in-person learning. At this time, no decision has been made regarding administration of final examinations. This decision will be announced later. It is possible that some or all of the final spring examinations will be administered in person.

A reminder – the School’s office and library will be closed starting Friday, December 18, 2020 and will reopen on Monday, January 4, 2021. Our administrative staff has worked tirelessly since March to keep the School’s doors open and to make sure our students have the best educational experience possible in this challenging environment. They, along with our students, have earned a break. While the staff will be monitoring their telephone calls and emails, their response to matters that do not require immediate attention may be delayed.

Enjoy your winter break from studies. All of us here at NSL hope this is a time when you can relax, recharge, and reset – this year more than ever.  We will see you in 2021 – in person or on Zoom.
