Whether you knew him as the friendly cashier with the warm smile at the Nashville School of Law Bookstore, or you admired his work as a prominent Nashville lawyer, Mr. Luther E. “Pete” Cantrell extended kindness to everyone he met and will be greatly missed.
Cantrell, age 88, passed away peacefully, with family by his side, on Monday, June 6, 2022, at the age of 88.
Cantrell is a 1965 graduate of Nashville School of Law. He joined our staff while in law school and worked under three deans including, J.G Lackey, Jr., Joe C Loser, Jr., and William C. Koch, Jr.
During his time at NSL, Cantrell served on staff as assistant secretary, assistant registrar, and cashier. A dedicated student and employee, Cantrell gave back to the School time and time again helping students, faculty and fellow colleagues. Cantrell generously funded a scholarship every year for NSL starting in the 1990’s, providing aid to dozens of students for more than 30 years.
In 1995, Cantrell contributed an article to the NSL newsletter about his graduating class, sharing this memory of their bar review course.
“The first night of the review these enterprising gents (course instructors) covered Torts and cited what seemed to be a hundred cases. The boys from the Y, always pressed for time, decided the cases should be split up among the members of the study group (about seven of us) so that each person would take between five and ten cases, brief them, and at the next study session would hand out to the other members of the group the benefits of his Labor as well as discussing the cases and all would thereby benefit by the collective knowledge of the group,” Cantrell said.
