For 2019-2020 Third- and Fourth-Year Students

The East Tennessee Foundation, which oversees the Tennessee Judicial Conference Foundation Scholarship, has established a fund to recognize advanced law students who have demonstrated community involvement and/or a commitment to public service and who have a financial need. 

This foundation will be awarding three (3) one-time scholarship grants to three NSL 2019-2020 Third- and Fourth-Year students.

Described as a “true statesman of the bar,” former Nashville School of Law Board of Trust member and instructor Douglas Murrey Fisher died Sunday, April 7, 2019 in Franklin at the age of 91.

Fisher cofounded the Nashville law firm of Howell & Fisher, PLLC. in 1964 after serving as an aide to governors Frank G. Clement, Sr. and Buford Ellington. Fisher was an inaugural member of the Board of Trust of the School and served from 1993 to 2015. He also taught Civil Procedure at the School for seven years. The School honored Fisher in 1997 with the Distinguished Faculty Award at its annual Recognition Dinner.

All 1L and 2L students are required to take a practice bar exam.

Here are the details:

• The exams will be administered at 6:30 p.m. on both May 13 and 16. Students need to attend only one testing date.
• 1Ls will have two hours to complete 67 multiple choice questions covering torts, contracts, and criminal law.
• 2Ls will have three hours to complete 100 multiple choice questions covering civil procedure, constitutional law, evidence, and property. 2Ls are welcome to take both tests if they wish to attend both nights.
• NSL exam conditions will apply. The tests will be on Scantron paper only. No computers.
• There is no signup needed.
• Completion of the test is required for advancement to the next year of study. Students who have completed only a portion of the requirements for either year should not take the test.
• Makeup exams are highly discouraged, as this date has been on the calendar since the academic schedule was announced. If you have an unavoidable conflict, contact Heather Bright in the office. Makeup fees will apply.

Individual results will be shared with students via SONIS and results review sessions will be scheduled.

3Ls & 4Ls

3L and 4L students are welcome to take either or both exams. Both exams will be administered on May 13 and May 16. Students are welcome to come to either or both days. 

The Tennessee Supreme Court has amended Supreme Court Rule 7, which focuses on the licensing of attorneys to practice law in Tennessee. These most recent changes follow other modifications that were made to the rule over the past several years.

The most recent changes primarily affect practice pending admission, in-house counsel registration by non-Tennessee lawyers, and the rules governing law students working under supervision as part of a law school educational program.
